A Word on Productivity & Comparison

A Word on Productivity & Comparison

You scroll through your social media feed, reading post after post from your author friends: That one who somehow publishes ten books in a year; that one who can write 100k in a week; one who just landed a book deal; one who manages to keep up with three different projects all at once and still responds to emails from readers within hours. You love these authors, and you want to be happy for them, but envy twists in your gut so you hit “like” without really meaning it and keep scrolling past, berating yourself all the while for once again watching envy eat your excitement for others’ successes.

Me too.

But we’re not stuck! Envy is persistent, absolutely. It takes conscious effort to shut down that voice in your head that says, “They’re doing everything right and I’m still struggling; how come they have it so easy?” But I’m going to pick apart the lies we hear when envy sneaks in and help you learn how to combat them. Book Review: Adorning the Dark by Andrew Peterson

Book Review: Adorning the Dark by Andrew Peterson

I wrote a book review for the first time in forever! This is actually a review of a reread, since I didn’t review this book the first time but it demanded a review. Adorning the Dark was a 5-star read in December of 2019, and it’s still a 5-star read now.

The first time I read this book I knew that it was beautiful, but it was like Continue reading “Book Review: Adorning the Dark by Andrew Peterson”

More than a Trope: Examples of Subverted Tropes from a Christian Perspective

More than a Trope: Examples of Subverted Tropes from a Christian Perspective

Tropes can be a powerful storytelling tool, but so often they’re overused and misused. Today I want to look at some trope examples that irk me personally (and/or that I’ve heard friends complain about) and provide some suggestions for how they could be subverted and given more thematic impact, especially according to a judeo-Christian worldview.

Strong Female Character

We all know this one. The girl who’s as strong as any guy, hides her emotions, and just generally could be swapped out for a guy except we need to empower women. By… telling them Continue reading “More than a Trope: Examples of Subverted Tropes from a Christian Perspective”

Writing Fiction as a Christian – Author Panel Interview

Writing Fiction as a Christian – Author Panel Interview

The time has come! As announced last week, I’m wrapping up my series on Christian fiction with an interview with a handful of other Christian authors! I had the privilege of hearing from Miranda Marie, Mattie May, and Brian McBride (Angela Watts was unfortunately unable to make it), and I’m super excited to share the interview with you today! I hope it’s an encouragement and maybe teaches you a little bit more about different perspectives on Christian fiction and the experience of writing and publishing fiction as a Christian. Enjoy! :)

How to Show Support for Writers in the Church

How to Show Support for Writers in the Church

Now that we’ve talked about the different types of Christian fiction and their unique benefits and I’ve hopefully encouraged and challenged you Christian writers in your own writing, I want to recommend some ways that we Christian authors can build up others in the community, because I think it can be something we neglect either because we don’t think about it, we don’t know how to do it effectively, or we don’t see the importance of it. (Or we’re just socially anxious and terrified they’ll be annoyed with us, but… that’s its own issue. ;P) So I want to give some concrete examples of ways to show support for writers in the Church.
